Buddy Guy Announces New Album ‘Ain’t Done With The Blues’

A Legendary Blues Icon Continues to Inspire

Buddy Guy, the celebrated multi-Grammy Award-winning blues legend, is widely regarded as one of the most influential architects of the blues. His innovative guitar techniques and raw vocal style have helped shape the modern sound of R&B and blues music. Now, at 89 years old, Buddy Guy is making headlines again with the announcement of his forthcoming album ‘Ain’t Done With The Blues’, set to release on July 30 via Silvertone/RCA Records — his birthday.

Reflecting on a Lifetime of Blues

In his own words, Buddy shares the significance of this new project:
“This album is about where I’ve been, it’s about where I’m going, and the people I learned everything from. Muddy, Wolf, Walter, Sonny Boy, BB, I could go on and on. Before they passed, they used to say, ‘Man, if you outlive me, just keep the Blues alive,’ and I’m trying to keep that promise.”

He adds a heartfelt note about aging:
“Now, I can’t kick my leg up high as I used to, or jump off the stage like I did in my 20s and 30s, but I’m going to give you everything I got as long as I got it.”

New Single “How Blues Is That?” Featuring Joe Walsh

Leading up to the album release, Buddy unveiled his electrifying new single “How Blues Is That?”, featuring legendary Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh. The track, co-written with Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Tom Hambridge and Richard Fleming, showcases Buddy’s bold vocals and expressive guitar work. Rob McNelley’s slick electric guitar and Kevin McKendree’s piano layers build intensity throughout the song.

An Authentic Blues Statement

The song opens with screaming guitar riffs, emblematic of Buddy’s signature style. Buddy sings:
“I’m from the backwoods way down South, grew up living hand to mouth.”
And right away, listeners are transported into the heart of genuine blues—raw, powerful, and real. Joe Walsh’s high-voltage guitar adds to the track’s fiery energy, creating a collaboration that’s nothing short of explosive.

Buddy Guy’s Continued Relevance and Impact

Fresh off a surprise appearance in Ryan Coogler’s blockbuster film ‘Sinners’, Buddy Guy’s latest album follows his seventh #1 Blues Album ‘The Blues Don’t Lie’. Despite announcing his farewell tour Damn Right Farewell Tour last year, Buddy’s passion for performance and recording remains strong.

Why Record New Music?

In Buddy’s words:
“They don’t play blues on your radio anymore like they used to on the big AM/FM stations. So, making movies, performing, and recording new music is important — it might inspire some young people to learn more about the blues.”

An 18-Track Journey Through the Blues

‘Ain’t Done With The Blues’ features 18 tracks filled with emotion, storytelling, and masterful musicianship. The album is a follow-up to his 2022 Billboard #1 Blues Album, ‘The Blues Don’t Lie’, and continues his streak of critically acclaimed work.

Notable Collaborations

The album boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists:

  • Christone “Kingfish” Ingram on “Where U At?”
  • Joe Walsh on “How Blues Is That?”
  • Joe Bonamassa on “Dry Stick”
  • Peter Frampton on “It Keeps Me Young”
  • The Blind Boys of Alabama on “Jesus Loves the Sinner”

Recording and Production

Recorded in Nashville and New Orleans, the album features Buddy, producer Tom Hambridge, Rob McNelley, and others. The songs blend original compositions with covers that span Buddy’s illustrious career, showcasing his guitar prowess and soulful vocals.

A Reflection of a Lifetime of Blues

From his humble beginnings in Louisiana to becoming a Chicago blues legend, Buddy Guy’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and timeless talent. His influence reaches beyond blues, inspiring iconic rock musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

The Heart of the Album

Tracks like “Been There Done That”, “How Blues Is That?”, and “I Don’t Forget” reflect Buddy’s personal journey, social consciousness, and dedication to the blues. His expressive guitar work and heartfelt lyrics continue to resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.

A Living Legend’s Enduring Spirit

Despite his age, Buddy Guy proves that the blues—and he—are “Ain’t Done With The Blues.” His commitment to keeping the genre alive is evident in every note, every performance, and every new recording. The release of ‘Ain’t Done With The Blues’ is a gift to fans and a testament to his enduring legacy.

Final Thoughts

Buddy Guy’s latest album is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a celebration of a lifetime dedicated to the blues. As he continues to record and perform, Buddy remains a beacon of authenticity and inspiration in the world of music. At nearly nine decades old, he’s living proof that true talent and passion only grow stronger with time.
