Can’t Miss Tracks: All 5 are amazing
If you’ve never heard of the Altered Five Blues Band, a glance at their frontman Jeff Taylor might be all the introduction you need. With his imposing presence and booming voice, Taylor’s larger-than-life persona perfectly sets the stage for what is a commanding musical experience. Since forming in Milwaukee in 2002, the Altered Five Blues Band has been delivering high-octane blues with grit and soul, and their latest release, Testifyin’, proves they’re far from slowing down.
A lot has happened since the band first hit the scene. After a period of developing their sound, they began writing original material in 2010, unlocking the door to national recognition. With the addition of legendary producer Tom Hambridge, Testifyin’ – their seventh studio release – marks the next exciting chapter in the band’s career. The EP, which was recorded over just two days in Nashville, packs a punch with five electrifying original tracks, and it’s easy to see why blues lovers are taking notice.
A Smokin’ Start with “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t”
The EP opens with “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t,” a funky blues track that immediately grabs your attention. Taylor’s powerful vocals lay down a bold statement of defiance, declaring he’s ready to conquer the world with just “two cups of coffee and a whole lot of drive.” The song features a snappy horn section, adding depth and energy to the track. Guitarist Jeff Schroedl provides a fiery solo, and the tight rhythm section of bassist Mark Solveson and drummer Alan Arber holds everything together. This track’s infectious groove is a perfect introduction to the rest of the EP.
Whiskey and Blues – “Whiskey Got Me Married”
Next up is “Whiskey Got Me Married,” a track that brings the blues with a little bit of humor and a whole lot of soul. With a title like that, you know it’s going to be a good time. The song is a simmering blues groove with guest harmonica virtuoso Jason Ricci adding his trademark howling harmonica. Schroedl’s scorching guitar solo adds fire to the track, while keyboardist Steve Huebler’s electric piano runs provide a smooth layer of texture. This track perfectly showcases the Altered Five’s ability to mix humor with deep blues feeling.
Delta Meets Chicago in “Brand New Bone”
“Brand New Bone” opens with a spare, Delta blues-inspired guitar riff before evolving into a full-blown Chicago blues masterpiece. Taylor’s vocals are a playful mix of swagger and charm as he sings about his relationship in a way that only a true bluesman could. Ricci’s harmonica work once again steals the show, and the band’s arrangement is flawless, with Huebler’s piano providing a soulful touch. The track feels like a journey through the roots of blues, seamlessly blending influences from across the genre’s rich history.
“I’ve Got the Scars to Prove It” – A Slow-Burning Blues Ballad
The mood shifts with “I’ve Got the Scars to Prove It,” a slow and soulful blues ballad that’s all about resilience. Taylor’s vocal delivery is poignant, and the song’s lyrics about life’s hardships strike a deep chord. The spacey organ, the subdued rhythm section, and Schroedl’s emotional guitar solo, which shifts from bright and soaring to soft and introspective, create a beautifully textured backdrop. Ricci’s harmonica adds another layer of soul, making this track a standout in the EP.
Uplifting Groove to Close: “You Can’t Win (If It Ain’t Within)”
The EP closes on a high note with “You Can’t Win (If It Ain’t Within),” a lively and positive track that serves as a reminder of the importance of inner strength. The rhythm section kicks it into gear, with a deep groove driving the song forward. Huebler’s Wurlitzer electric piano lays a smooth foundation, and Schroedl’s sharp guitar lines provide a burst of energy. It’s an uplifting ending to an EP that showcases the band’s versatility, from hard-hitting grooves to slower, more reflective moments.
A Band at the Top of Their Game
One of the most remarkable things about Testifyin’ is how every song feels like a keeper. The band’s tight playing, clever songwriting, and Taylor’s distinctive vocals make each track memorable. Despite only being five songs long, Testifyin’ packs more punch than many full-length albums. The EP’s quick, under-20-minute runtime might leave listeners wanting more, but that’s part of the magic. Leaving you craving the next chapter in the Altered Five Blues Band’s story.
With Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge at the helm, Testifyin’ has the polish and finesse that the band’s previous releases were building toward. It’s clear that the Altered Five Blues Band is not just another blues band – they’re a force to be reckoned with. From the raw energy of “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t” to the emotional depth of “I’ve Got the Scars to Prove It,” this EP is a masterclass in modern blues.
Testifyin’ may be a brief EP, but it’s one that’ll stick with you long after the final track. If you haven’t discovered the Altered Five Blues Band yet, now is the perfect time to dive in.
