‘Chasing the Sun’ with Colin James

Date:

Album: Chasing the Sun, 2024

Can’t Miss Tracks: Protection, How It Feels To Be Loved, In My Own Dream

Colin James, the Canadian roots rocker who’s found a beloved spot in my music rotation, has once again captured my ear with his latest album, Chasing the Sun. Known for his effortless blend of blues, country rock, and contemporary influences, James has become a fixture in both my office and on my sets for Blues Music Fan Radio.

Chasing the Sun marks a refreshing evolution in James’s discography. With a host of legendary collaborators—including Lucinda Williams, Charlie Musselwhite, and producer Colin Linden—James effortlessly mingles with the giants of the genre. The album brings to mind the classic sounds of Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, and The Eagles, yet carves out its own unique space in the middle of the road.

From the moment the album kicks off with the dynamic track “Protection,” listeners are greeted with a surprise: Lucinda Williams joins James with her unmistakable voice, adding a layer of swagger and wisdom to the song. This collaboration, alongside gospel greats Ann and Regina McCrary, sets the tone for an album that is both fresh and familiar.

“Protection” is such a powerful introduction to this album. As expected from James, each track is unmistakably his, but no two songs are identical. The bluesy “I’m Still Alive” smoothly follows, leading into the salacious “Devilment,” which features some stellar harmonica work by one of my favorite harmonica players, Charlie Musselwhite.

The overall mood of Chasing the Sun is relaxed and laid-back—a welcome retreat from the chaos of the world. The album encourages listeners to close the curtains get a cup of coffee or tea and immerse themselves in tracks like “Star Studded,” “Open Your Mind,” and the spine-tingling “In My Own Dream”, while leaning back on the sofa with eyes closed and letting the music soothe tired souls.

Producer Colin Linden deserves credit for the album’s exceptional cohesion, seamlessly transitioning between the soulful “In My Own Dream” and the politically charged “This Song Kills Hate,” followed by the acoustic blues of “Come To Find Out.”

Favorites on this album is two very different tracks: the slow, breathtaking “Crystal Ball” and the Southern Gothic “How It Feels To Be Loved.” Each song offers a unique experience, and the organ playing throughout evokes a sunset over a picturesque landscape.

Chasing the Sun as Colin James’s 21st album, is like a coming of age. He has brought together a dream team of musical heavyweights. Chasing the Sun features not only Lucinda Williams and Charlie Musselwhite but also bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Charley Drayton, known for their work with legends like Miles Davis and the Rolling Stones. The album is a testament to James’s enduring talent and his ability to push the boundaries of his music.

In conclusion, Chasing the Sun is a masterful blend of technical brilliance and emotional depth. The relaxed, convivial atmosphere of the writing and recording sessions shines through, making this album an absolute pleasure from start to finish. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to Colin James’s music, this album is sure to impress.
