The articles, Meet the BMFR DJs, that I will aspire to write are of the amazing DJs who volunteer their time to spin on the Online Radio Station each week.
This article will focus on DJ Loren, who spins on Fridays, 4 pm-6pm eastern standard time.
Sookie Jade: About DJing, you know we all want to know – How did it all start for you?
Loren: It all started when I was a kid, listening to a DJ on the radio, thinking boy would that be cool to do that for a living! Then as a sophomore in High School, I had a drama class, and I remember telling them I was going to be a DJ one day. After a year in college, I decided to pursue the career I dreamed of, so I enrolled in Broadcasting School. I had the opportunity to work for several AM stations (FM was just coming more available) for a few years.
Sookie Jade: You have the best memes, do you design them?
Loren: I find them on Facebook, for the most part.
Sookie Jade: They are hilarious! I hope people that read this will come into the BMFR Discord Server (group) and see them.
Sookie Jade: How do you come up with your playlists?
Loren: On Fridays, my set is titled “Fresh Friday Blues Express”, so I play tunes from the current year. I search through the newest first, looking for something I like that is upbeat to start the show. I take my time, listening to the tunes, so there is a smooth flow of the music. However, the mood is set by the mood I am in when I put together the set days in advance.
Sookie Jade: What’s one track that never gets old for you, no matter how many times you hear it?
Loren: A song called The Work Song by Oscar Browne, Jr. It was originally a Jazz classic. It has been covered by many, Omar and the Howlers version is the one I love. It’s from their Swingland Album. Then also, Paul Butterfield did a great cover, and I just love the song.
Sookie Jade: And with that – If you could meet any artist from the Blues, who would you pick and why?
Loren: I have met and spoken with several, but I would love to sit down with John Mayall. His Turning Point album got me interested in the Blues in 1969. He also got to work with many great bluesmen, and I can just imagine the stories he could tell!
Sookie Jade: In the Chatroom, we get to meet the fans, do you have a story about the chatroom that you would like to share?
Loren: We have great listeners and friends in the Chat room! Ttom is one week older than me, both grew up in the Pacific Northwest, in the same era, but on opposite sides of the Canadian border. But, our experiences are much the same. We are brothers from a different mother. 🙂 And Vodka Jay, I saw he made a donation, and had a business near me. I went to thank him for that donation and for listening, and we’ve been friends ever since.
Sookie Jade: If you could be stuck in one year’s music scene, which would you pick and why?
Loren: I would go back to 1969. That year was an incredible one for music. So many great musicians rose to prominence.
