Robin Trower: Still Finding the Soul in Six Decades

Robin Trower. The name itself conjures images of smoky clubs, soulful guitar riffs, and a legacy built on six decades of unwavering dedication to his craft. Now, approaching 80, this legendary musician is back with his latest offering, “Come And Find Me,” proving that age is just a number when the passion still burns bright.

A Legacy Forged in Sound

With nearly thirty albums under his belt, both solo and through iconic collaborations with the likes of Jack Bruce and Bryan Ferry, Trower’s impact on music is undeniable. After leaving the seminal Procol Harum, his solo journey began with the classic “Twice Removed From Yesterday” in 1973, quickly followed by the monumental “Bridge of Sighs” – an album so significant it recently received a deluxe reissue. Since then, he’s barely paused for breath, a testament to his relentless creative drive.

Echoes of the Past, A Sound All His Own

Back in the day, Trower was often unfairly labeled a Hendrix imitator. While you can certainly hear echoes of Jimi’s fluid lines woven into his playing, as the saying goes, what on earth is wrong with that? If you’ve got that kind of talent, why not flaunt it? “Come And Find Me” doesn’t represent a drastic change in direction; this is Robin Trower doing what he does best, and he’s not about to alter his winning formula now.

A Trusted Band of Collaborators

For “Come And Find Me,” Trower has once again enlisted his trusted studio band. Drummer Chris Taggart provides the powerful rhythmic foundation, while returning US bassist Glenn Letsch lays down the low end on tracks like “Tangled Love” and “I Fly Straight To You.” Long-standing vocalist Richard Watts brilliantly interprets Trower’s highly personal lyrics, and guest singer Jess Hayes makes a head-turning addition on the tough, choppy soul tune “Tangled Love.” It’s a shame she wasn’t given more space to shine.

Crafting the Sound

Adding the final touches, Trower turned to Sam Winfield at Studio 91 for engineering and mixing, but Trower’s involvement was intimate and all-encompassing. “For me, working on a new song is a 24-hour job,” he reveals. “It’s always on my mind. I’ll wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it.” This dedication to every element of the recording process is evident in the album’s polished sound.

A Glimpse into the Album’s Soul

“A Little Bit Of Freedom” kicks off the album with a combative energy, marked by a blast of wah-wah guitar and a bold opening line: “I don’t need no-one to think for me.” The following track, “One Go Round,” offers a shift in tempo, with Trower’s playing echoing another 60s guitar hero, the late Paul Kossoff. His spooky, fluid spectral playing floats over a soulfully smoking track, culminating in a captivating solo. The title track, “Come & Find Me,” begins as a slow, soulful blues before building into a spectacular spiraling guitar epic that then drops away, creating a compelling effect.

“Come And Find Me”: A Testament to Enduring Brilliance

“Come And Find Me,” was released on April 25th via Provogue, and is much more than just another release in an illustrious career. Trower explores new sonic landscapes while remaining true to his signature style. His ability to channel raw human emotion through his road-worn Fender Stratocaster and revved-up Marshall amplifier remains a rare and powerful gift. As he says, “Every album starts the same way. I sit down with my guitar, play around until something sticks, and suddenly a song is born.”

A Blues Rock Masterpiece

“Come And Find Me” is a Blues Rock masterpiece – emotional, resonating, and fiercely demanding. It shows that age and surgery are not hindrances to the pleasure of the creative. Tracks like “I Would Lose My Mind,” “The Future Starts Right Here,” the emotive “Take This Hurt Away,” and “I Fly Straight To You” showcase Trower’s combative vision and the warmth and dedication in his music.

Time, a Companion to Trower’s Soulful Sound

The sense of creative endings that so many artists dread seems far off for Robin Trower. While he speaks plainly of this fear, his latest album, “Come And Find Me,” offers a majestic reassurance that Time is very much a companion, a comrade to this legendary musician who recognizes the vitality and meaning of his life’s work. To state the obvious again: no one plays guitar like Robin Trower. That soulful, mellifluous sound colors everything he does on “Come And Find Me.” It’s present on the opening tracks and throughout the album. While his lyrics may have grown darker over the years, there’s always a note of hope in what he does.

Reflective, But Still Moving Forward

“Capture The Life Begun” offers a simply gorgeous air, a summer breeze wafting through the music. While the album ends with the reflective “Time Stood Still,” we all know time doesn’t stand still – least of all for Trower himself. As he says, “It’s kind of scary. You know that you’re way down the road, and you could hit a brick wall at any time. But I still love doing this. For me, there’s nothing more rewarding than working on a new song…” It shows. This period of his career is among his most productive and arguably his best.

A Perfect Farewell?

The final track, “Time Stood Still,” winds down the intensity, offering a look back with longing. Nostalgia meets premonitions of mortality perhaps, with lines like “the future is always here.” Expressive percussion from Chris Taggart, Trower’s yearning guitar, and Watts’ emotive vocals create a powerful sense of reflection. Should this be the last Robin Trower album, it would be a fittingly soulful closure. “Time Stood Still” could be the perfect farewell. I hope not. But for me, this last track does make time stand still, bringing the past into the present and joining the dots to a bigger picture.
