Sinners Soundtrack Review

Okay, first things first: this review is strictly about the soundtrack, not the movie. The film will only be referenced in relation to the soundtrack itself.

The film, as well as the soundtrack, opens with the angelic-sounding Pleasant Valley Youth Choir of New Orleans. If you’ve ever been to a Black church, the voices of these young men and women will transport you right back to those Sundays. And while these youngsters will blow you away, they are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the musical talent showcased on this soundtrack – talent like Bobby Rush, Cedric Burnside, 1930s recording star Geeshie Wiley, and elder statesman of the blues Buddy Guy.

But don’t be fooled into thinking that this is just another blues album, because it’s far from that. Irish traditional and Americana styles are also well represented. Jack O’Connell and Lola Kirke cover “Rocky Road to Dublin” and “Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?”, while Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson dive into Americana with “Old Corn Liquor.”

Now, while these three genres aren’t ones you’d expect to blend naturally, on this soundtrack they hold hands and skip down that old-timey dirt road happily together. Though it has little to do with the film itself, this album weaves together the roots of American music and points you toward the rich legacy those roots have grown.
